SCREAMS of delight filled the air as thousands soaked up the atmosphere of Oxford’s annual St Giles’ Fair.

Youngsters tucked into candy- floss and toffee apples while daredevils braved the most andrenaline-fuelled rides.

More than 100,000 revellers were expected to have visited the fair, which drew to a close last night, across the two days it was running.

The event dates back to the 1600s and is held in St Giles’ every September.

Magdalen Street and St Giles will be closed until about 6.30am today for the rides to be packed away.

City council fair co-ordinator Mike Newman said: “This year the fair has been the busiest I have seen it.

“The weather has been bad for most of the summer but scorching for the two days of the fair so people have come out to take advantage.”

Casey Tricker, 10, from Blackbird Leys, was at the fair with dad Simon, 35, and cousin Faith Bayliss, one.

Casey said: “It was good fun taking Faith on one of the rides – I love going to the fair!”

I'm surprised children can afford to go on the rides - more expensive than Stagecoach bus fares!
