MORE than 50 years after it lit up the silver screen, youngsters have taken on West Side Story for a production at Pegasus Theatre.

About 40 teenagers are staging the story of star-crossed lovers in New York at the Magdalen Road theatre this week.

They were given the free opportunity thanks to youth theatre charity RicNic, which is visiting the city for the first time.

Taking the role of Riff is Wantage’s Henry McPherson, who said: “It has been pretty tough because we have been in every day for three weeks but it has been worth it.”

Feeling his collar as Officer Krupke, is Andrew Archibald, 19, who said: “It is good fun, it is something to do during the holidays and do a nice bit of hammy acting.”

You can see performances tonight at 7pm and tomorrow at 2pm and 7pm.
