FORMER Oxford United stars turned out for a match to support the family of a 22-year-old football player who lost his cancer battle this year.
They raised £2,000 for the family of Chipping Norton FC player Shaun Weller and Oxford’s Churchill Hospital at Sunday’s game. Mr Weller died in May from liver cancer.
The former United players came back from 3-0 down at half-time to win 5-3.
Former U’s stars including Joey Beauchamp, Peter Rhoades-Brown, Les Robinson and Chris Allen, took part in the match at Chipping Norton’s Walterbush Road ground.
Mr Rhoades-Brown was handed the trophy by Mr Weller’s daughter Tiana, two, and parents Anthony and Charmaine.
He said: “It was a great day. “None of the boys who came with me knew Shaun but when I told them about the cause there was no hesitation.”
Chipping Norton FC manager Mark Moss said: “It was pretty emotional.” Organisers are hoping to make the game an annual fixture.
