THE rain mercifully held off Banbury’s historic hobby horse celebration on Sunday.

More than 1,000 people flocked to the town centre and People’s Park for the event.

They welcomed an Olympic-style procession from Banbury Town Hall to the park for an afternoon of fun.

Visitors enjoyed races featuring the wooden horses, sporting demonstrations and Olympic-style events.

Among those putting on demonstrations were youngsters from Banbury’s Sharon Green Dance Academy.

Mrs Green said: “It was brilliant, the weather held for us.

“The girls were going to put on their little high heels but because of the weather we decided to put them in wellies.”

Enjoying the sunshine was Banbury resident Lisa Vass, 40.

She said: “It was good, it was great event for the community.”

The event also marked Town Mayor’s Sunday for Banbury Town Council.

Leader Kieron Mallon said organisers heaved a sigh of relief as the rain held off.
