FANCY yourself as a bit of a brain-box, a pub pundit or perhaps an armchair Magnus Magnusson?

If so, the Oxford Mail has got just the thing for you.

The Oxfordshire Quiz Winter League is about to draw to a close. But after a short break the popular pub and club quiz will be back just in time for the summer.

The organisers of the league, which is sponsored by the Oxford Mail, are urging those with a passion for general knowledge to join the fold.

Organiser and Oxford Mail columnist David Quinn said the wide range of competitions and divisions in the league meant all were welcome.

He said: “The Winter League tends to be the bigger league.

“That’s when you have about 25 to 30 teams taking part.

“In summer, people tend to be outside playing things like Aunt Sally. But we would love more people to join us.

“You don’t even need to find a team to play with. If you are genuinely interested, we can find you a side to play with.”

The league will meet at the North Oxfordshire Conservative Club on Thursday, where winners of the Winter League’s various competitions will receive their prizes.

But it will also be a chance for would-be quiz teams to pit their wits against established players. Among the new hopefuls will be a team from the Oxford Mail.

Mr Quinn said while existing teams boasted past winners of BBC TV quiz shows Mastermind and Eggheads in their ranks, anyone with a solid interest in quizzes can join.

He said: “You don’t have to commit to play all year round, just for the league.

“It’s a good night out spent with friends with similar interests at pubs and clubs around the county.”
