A REGGAE DJ who was made an MBE in the New Year’s Honours said last night that he developed his passion for music while at school in Kidlington.

David Rodigan, above, who now lives in London, has presented reggae, roots and rocksteady radio shows for about 30 years on Capital Radio and Kiss FM.

The 60-year-old lived in Kidlington and attended Gosford Hill Secondary School in Oxford Road during the 1960s.

He said: “We used to run an arts club at Gosford School and to raise money for the club we put on discos during lunchtimes in the gymnasium.

“We played rocksteady, reggae and soul, and people used to come and dance in their plimsolls.

“It was just amazing.”

He would attend gigs in Oxford during the swinging decade and saw the likes of Jimmy Cliff, the Spencer Davies Group and Jimmy Hendrix.

He said: “It was a very exciting time and that is where I first got into it and where the passion developed.”

Mr Rodigan went on to become one of the world’s top reggae DJs.
