STRIKING workers yesterday protested against cuts to youth services outside an Oxfordshire County Council meeting.

The members of the Unite union are unhappy at council plans to cut money spent on youth services from £3.7m to £2.3m.

Mike Beal, Unite branch chairman for community and youth workers said: “It does not have to be this way.

“Our members would much rather be doing their jobs and reaching out to young people.”

But Oxfordshire County Council said all 26 Oxfordshire youth centres had been saved through Big Society cash and the transfer of buildings to schools.

County council cabinet member for policy Kieron Mallon said: “It is good news for all that we are in such a positive position despite the fact that the council had less money to spend on youth services.”
