TWO councils are making up for garden waste collections missed following the snow before Christmas.

Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire District Councils are allowing residents who pay for the brown bin service to put out extra waste over the next two weeks.

The garden waste collections were cancelled over Christmas to allow crews and vehicles to clear the backlog of other waste collections missed because of the weather.

Extra garden waste will be collected in the Vale from March 28 to April 1 and in South from April 4 to 8.

But any extra rubbish must be no more than an extra bin load, should be light enough for one person to lift, in a strong box or bag, and open so crews can see it is garden waste.

Customers were able to put out extra garden waste for collection on January 12 but the councils are offering the additional collections in the spring when people usually have more garden waste.

Matt Prosser, strategic director at the councils, said: “We sincerely apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced by our temporary suspension of the garden waste collections over Christmas and New Year.

“We hope that by taking extra waste when collections started again in January and again over the next couple of weeks will help make up for the unfortunate disruption to this service.”
