PODGY ponies at the Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Burford are being put on a diet.
The charity said about 40 per cent of all ponies arriving at the centre for rehoming are overweight.
Equine welfare supervisor Gemma Taylor said: “It’s down to rich grazing and lack of exercise.
“Horses are designed to roam over large areas but nowadays they are kept in very small paddocks.”
