All-action summer ahead for Leys teenagers

DOZENS of teenagers in Blackbird Leys are looking forward to a summer jam-packed full of activities.

The Oxford estate’s youth centre is organising a month-long programme of free activities, which starts on Monday.

The activities are open to all members of the youth centre, which is free to join for teenagers aged between 13 and 19.

Many of the activities are close to home, including skating at Oxford Ice Rink, swimming at Hinksey Pool and an activity day at the Scouts’ Activity Centre, at Boars Hill, where everything from abseiling to archery is on offer.

But there are also outings further afield, including a day trip to London and visits to the Thorpe Park theme park in Surrey and the Coral Reef Water Park in Bracknell.

Sociology graduate and youth worker Patrick Chambers, 22, has been helping to organise the programme.

He said: “We’ve got all sorts of trips.

“The aim is to engage the young people in things that they enjoy.

“There are a variety of different activities and it’s a good chance for them to try something different.

“I have never been canoeing before and I’m sure if I was a young person I would be taking part in these things.

“It’s about learning new skills and encouraging different interests during the summer holidays.

“It’s definitely worth it and any young person is welcome. It will be a friendly environment, very positive and fun.”

Mr Chambers has also planned a football tournament between teams from youth clubs across Oxford.

Area youth worker Gillian Elliott said the annual scheme was jointly funded by Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council.

She said: “The activities are to challenge and inspire the young people.

“The young people are instrumental so they chose the activities and they have pulled together the whole package.”

She added: “The numbers on each activity vary according the venue for example there are 20 places available for the Youlbury Activity Centre.

“Places on trips and activities can not be guaranteed as there is a high demand.”

Bit unfair on the other areas of deprivation around Oxford where kids could benefit from this too - who decided which kids have these activities even though their parents all have to pay the same amount of council tax! Obviously Oxford City Council doesn't accept there is a recession on and got loads of dosh to throw around.

The summer project was not just funded by the county council, and the youth service has allready made all the required savings for this financial year.
Also, it's not jut available to leys teenagers. On the project there are teenagers from banbury and rose hill, and its open to anyone who wants to attend.
Any youth centre from any area of depravation can apply for the funding, its only due to the hard work of the youth workers in that area that the summer programme is available in the leys.

Did you really mean that ? If that is true , I am unsure if this scheme should be allowed to continue.

I assume none of the anti youth funding brigade on here have walked down Banbury Road and seen the large signs for the holiday camps? Or been to any of the leisure centres that offer holiday camps. It is just that this one is in the paper.
.
And besides, kids in BBL are more likely to set fire to trees (as highlighted in a different story here) if they have nothing to do, at a GREATER cost to the taxpayer that the hire of a minibus for a week.
.
Those high and mighty among you, get a grip! You may have the money to take Arrabella to Gymkhana, or to take little Roderick skiing, but a lot of people dont.
.
If anything, question the amount of benefits their parents (or more likely "parent") is on and why they haven't taken Kai and Lashonda to Mosel

- Beginners' pyrotechnics and tree cremation;

- Intermediate car torching;

- Advanced elevator-territory marking for tower blocks. (An "at-risk" skill since the filling in of Headington underpass!)
