Art puts over climate change lesson

WITNEY residents got together to create artwork and to talk about climate change.

Oxfam held an ‘Artopia’ project at the Corn Exchange, in Market Square, where people were invited to talk about what could be done to make the world a greener place.

There were workshops all day, led by local artists Janina Bisley, who volunteers at Witney’s Oxfam shop, and Maureen Wilksher, whose studio was washed away in the Witney floods of 2007.

Ms Wilksher said: “The effects of global climate change are already having a devastating impact on people’s lives and it is the world’s poorest that are worst affected. But a climate chaos-free future is possible.

“Art has often been about pointing to the way things should be and we want people to create the kind of green and fair world that they want to see.”

Adults and children used modelling clay, paint, buttons and fabric to create displays ranging from farmers with their crops to renewable energy and sea life.

The finished pieces of artwork are now on display at the Oxfam Bookshop, in High Street.
