AN ELECTRICAL goods recycling scheme in north Oxfordshire, launched in February, has been highly commended in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycler of the Year category of the Materials Recycling Week awards.

It is the second time Cherwell District Council’s scheme has been recognised by the recycling industry.

Electrical items can be disposed of in one of 16 pink recycling bins across the district.

In May, it bagged runner-up spot in the Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative, in the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management 2010.

George Reynolds, executive member for environment, recreation and health, said: “We’ve already collected more than seven tonnes of small waste electrical items which might otherwise have gone to landfill. Almost every part of these can be used to create something new.”
