OXFORD is losing its local hardware stores. They are, as one shop owner said today, “dropping like flies”.
Last week we reported on the closure of England’s oldest ironmonger, Gill’s, and today it is the turn of Broughton’s, in North Parade, to pull down the shutters.
It is a crying shame we are losing these treasure troves, and – most importantly – the customer service they offer. But if we don’t use them instead of the giant DIY, we will lose them. And then we can only blame ourselves.
