Novelist Brian Aldiss is angry that an Oxford street has been wrongly named on a bus company map of the city.

The science fiction writer lives in St Andrew's Road, Headington, but the new public transport route plan has merged the street with Barton Lane.

Mr Aldiss, 74, said: "I think it's a bit of an impertinence, really. It purports to be a map of the whole city and yet St Andrew's Road is completely ignored.

"It is historically an important street, with a beautiful church, and many people may want to know how to get there by public transport." It is the second map produced by the Oxford Bus Company, which has included the mistake.

St Andrew's Road and Barton Lane are opposite one another at a cross road with Old Headington Road. Although no buses travel down St Andrew's Road, every street in Oxford is listed on the map, so commuters can instantly spot nearby bus stops and routes.

Mr Aldiss said: "I complained the first time, but received no reply - so I haven't bothered complaining to them this time. "Ultimately, their source for the map must have been from the Ordnance Survey map, so how they made the mistake I just don't know."

Oxford Bus Company spokesman Phil Clark said: "I'm very sorry that this has happened. We will be talking to our cartographers and get it right for the next edition.

"I am really embarrassed that this has happened at all."
