Residents in an Oxford street are angry there are no traffic calming measures, even though money has been available for almost 10 years.

Householders in Sandfield Road, Headington, claim their road has become a rat run since the Sandfield Nursery was built at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

They said parents used the street to drop off children, with little regard for pedestrians or cyclists who also use the road.

Although Sandfield Nursery owner Childbase paid £7,000 towards improvements to the Sandfield Road and Woodlands Road junction when planning permission was given in 1993, nothing has been done.

The nursery was initially banned from using Woodlands Road for access, and parents were reach the building through the hospital site but the ruling was overturned.

Now people living in the area are worried because Childbase, which already has 53 places, has been granted permission to look after an extra 20 children.

Bob Clarke, a member of Beech Road, Horwood Close and Sandfield Residents' Association, said: "I'm fed up with it. Sandfield Road is a rat run.

"Even though they handed over money to improve the junction, nothing has been done.

"It's very dangerous and the people who use it couldn't care less. Now the nursery has planning approval to increase the size of the nursery, so there will be even more cars."

Resident Vivianne Crombie complained that medical staff who took their children to the nursery were not willing to walk there from the hospital's car parks.

She said: "People delivering their children to nursery never think about the other children and cyclists using the road."

Oxfordshire County Council's principal engineer John Kramer said traffic calming was not planned at the moment.

He added: "There have been talks with Oxford City Council about improvements where there's already money available to fund them.

"Various schemes for Sandfield Road have been produced by Oxford City Council, but none of them has been approved by the city's traffic and highways committee, or the residents."
