Hospitals, university colleges and a police station are among the buildings being earmarked for mobile phone masts in Oxford.

Hutchison 3G has revealed where it is planning to place controversial masts and dishes as part of its plans to provide coverage across the UK. Mayfield House in Summertown, Corpus Christi College, the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital, Lincoln College and Cowley Police Station are among sites where the company is considering placing equipment. It has already installed equipment at Somerville College and has permission to use Lincoln College for its masts and dishes.

It provided maps showing the sites it intends to use to provide coverage across the city for its new network, 3, at a drop-in information event on March 5, at New Marston First School, Copse Lane, Headington.

The network was launched on Monday, in London and the South Sast. The company's plans to expand its coverage across the whole of the UK.

It offers third generation mobile phones, which allow users to send and receive e-mails and pictures, watch videos and use online personal organisers.

The event aimed to answer questions from residents who fear proposals for masts and dishes at an existing telephone exchange in London Road will cause an eyesore and create a health hazard due to radiation levels.

Company representatives said radiation levels would be kept within Government guidelines.

Bob Clarke, 70, of Beech Road, Headington had been worried the equipment would affect the area's landscape.

After attending the drop-in event, Mr Clarke said he felt more positive about the scheme.
