Thames Valley Police crime-solving rated 'poor'

The performance of Oxfordshire’s police has been rated ‘fair’ by Government inspectors.

Thames Valley Police is ranked in the lower half of 42 forces across England and Wales in a report released by Her Majesty’s Government Inspectorate today.

Inspectors criticised the force's record for solving crime, ranking it ‘poor’.

The force received ‘poor’ for satisfaction levels among ethnic minorities, but scored ‘excellent’ for cutting road deaths and injuries.

In the 19 other crime-related categories Thames Valley was ranked ‘fair’ or ‘meeting the standard’.

Inspectors rated the force ‘medium’ for value for money.

Chief Constable Sara Thornton has responded to the report saying she is concerned about poor levels of solving crimes and demanded improvement.

I think part of the problem is, as we see on here regularly, a criminal is caught red-handed, goes to court and gets let off with a pathetic fine and a slapped wrist. Must be very frustrating and demotivating. Though havign said that, TVP response on drunk & disorderly and anti-social behaviour near here is appalling, when a copper greets someone as "alright mate?" it doesn't bode well.

Thames Valley police are a total embarrassment!!
They have a reputation for being one of the worst performing in the country- and justifiably so!
I have on several occasions needed to contact Thames Valley Police however the co-operation and support I received was zero!!
The police in Banbury are the worst and are known for being lazy, unhelful and incompetent. Infact many people comment on how useless they are and this is common knowledge. It is no surprise that this report has shown them to under-perform!
The only things they are good for is sliding down hills in the snow on their riot shields as sledges, shooting themselves, committing fraud and increasing our council tax! These are just some incidents that have been highlighted in the media recently but many other instances of misconduct within Thames Valley police get covered up and “glossed over” by their Professional Standards Dept…Thames Valley Police……shame on you!!

Having been a victim of Crime in Oxford I have to say the way I was dealt with by the Police was fantastic and I was very well cared for. Having said that - through no fault of the PC dealing with my case - things moved so slowly due to the high level of red tape the Police encounter and the exhaustive demands placed on them by the courts.

I could not believe the amount of forms the PC had to fill out, pages of statements he had to write, and I was just the victim. The PC also had to go and do the same with loads of witnesses and then deal with the offender. I would have thought the incident would have taken two or three hours to deal with, but it must have taken three or four days solid work over a couple of months and I am just one victim!

I was the victim of an assault and the offender got a pitiful sentence. He also had 56 previous convictions. What we should be asking is why the Police have to keep dealing with the same people time and time again, and when will the courts start to protect us. But that would involve some journalism rather than just copying a press release from the HMIC!
