Nursery children cook up treats for teatime

CHILDREN got a taste for healthy eating when they rustled up a cake at their Oxford nursery.

Youngsters sliced, sieved and mixed ingredients to make an apple and pear upsidedown cake.

The aim was to help them learn about the benefits of making healthy, nutritious meals.

They peeled the fruit and arranged the slices on a baking tin, drizzling them with maple syrup before covering the fruit with cake mixture.

The wholesome treat – arranged as part of National School Meals Week – also marked the change in name of the nursery in Ashhurst Way, Rose Hill.

It is now known as Co-operative Childcare rather than Imagine Co-operative Childcare.

Manager Jacky Jones said: “Their favourite bit was the mixing, but one little girl, Linda, really enjoyed breaking the eggs – she knew exactly what she was doing. We aim for the children to have five portions of fruit or vegetables a day.”

Meanwhile, boys in Abingdon are doing good deeds – by baking and delivering cakes to elderly people.

Teenagers from Year Nine at Abingdon School visited residents of the town’s Cygnet Court sheltered housing complex on Tuesday to serve tea.

Each fortnight, a different group of pupils visits the retirement flats in Caldecott Road to deliver fresh-baked treats, including flapjacks and iced buns.

They also put on a special spread for the residents every Christmas and Easter.

Resident Phyllis Eady, 84, said: “They’re lovely boys and it’s very kind of them to come round with cakes.

“We all really look forward to their visit and it’s great to see them doing good work in the community.”

School spokesman Louisa Hayden said: “The boys are really conscientious and put in a lot of work in the kitchen, baking all types of treats for the elderly residents.”
