Oxford pupils in spin for cycling event

CHILDREN enjoyed two days focusing on everything to do with bicycles at Cherwell School in Oxford.

Pupils took part sporting events like cyclocross and bicycle polo and listened to an orchestra performing music created with bike bells.

Pictured on a special seven-seat bike are, from left, pupils Oliver Moore, Calvin Tse and Joe Willoughby, Dan Harris, the co-founder of Oxford Cycle Workshop Training Centre, Danielle Ballentine, a composer with the Oxford Bike Bell Orchestra, Josie Hefferman, the regional development manager for British Cycling, and pupils Will Tayor and Lily Vernon.

The event also acted as a launch for the school’s British Cycling-affiliated cycling club — the only club like it in a city school.

It was organised in conjunction with Oxford Cycle Workshop Training Centre, which has been running programmes on bike building, maintenance and riding skills since January, working with Year Eight and Nine children.

Mr Harris said: “The work we have been doing has been really successful, seeing the development they have made over the last six months.”

The cycling club will be up and running from the September term, led by teacher Tony Gray, a British Cycling coach.
