UPDATE: Travel latest - A34 closed, rail services latest

For the latest traffic information see the Live Travel updates on the right hand side of the page.

The Highways Agency is urging motorists to avoid areas of the A34 this morning.

Heavy delays have been reported in both directions of the road through the county, but the agency said it is continuing to grit the carriageways.

A spokesman said: “Highways Agency advice is to avoid the A34 from the A415 junction near Abingdon to the A4130 near Milton. There are delays northbound from the M4 at Junction 13 near Chieveley to Ilsley and southbound from Abingdon for around four miles.

"Vehicles can use the M4, M40 and M25. HGVs are finding it difficult to travel and are getting stuck.

"A gritter is patrolling the stretch with the police to clear incidents."

The latest travel reports say the dual carriageway is closed in both directions, and there is an accident on the southbound carriageway of the M40 at junction 10 at Ardley.

There is also a broken-down lorry on M40 southbound between junction six at Watlington and junction five at Stokenchurch.

London Road at Headington, near Green Road roundabout, is closed (9.50am) in both directions because a vehicle has broken down.

The M40 is closed northbound between junction 10 at Ardley and junction 11 at Banbury because of an obstruction on the road.

Stagecoach and the Oxford Bus Company have cancelled a number of services, and First Great Western are running a reduced service between Henley and London Paddington.

Alison Brumfitt, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance, said: “There have been a number of road traffic accidents, but most drivers seem to be getting the message that they need to drive carefully, and should not go out unless they absolutely need to.”

First Great Western services are running as normal into London Paddington despite the snow, according to the firm’s travel website.

The 10am service from Oxford to Paddington is cancelled, but no further delays have been reported so far into the capital, apart from a reduced service between Henley and London. FGW spokesman Ellie Banks said all other services from Oxford were running as normal.

So the access to the A34 (Lodge Hill), is blocked. Slow going when I went through at 06:30-07:00am this morning.

Question: Why have Stagecoach suspended all their bus services whilst The Oxford Bus Company are running all theirs?

Not that ANY bus can get anywhere?.

Maybe better coffee machine/canteen in Stagecoach bus depot?.

Well I got into the city centre on an Oxford Bus, no problems at all.

Fed up with lame excuses, Stagecoach has been shown up here!

I think you will find the answer on Headington Hill. Between 8am and 9am this morning about six buses were abandoned there, with one airport bus crashed into the side. There was no bus service at all into Oxford from Headington this morning: maybe someone can update the situation.

Stagecoach are being realistic, given the terrible state of the roads.

The Headington buses are now diverted via Morrell Avenue. Stagecoach realistic? More like the negative mindset now prevalent in this country. Due to lack of Stagecoach buses, I resorted to hitchhiking into work, but depsite being on crutches, it took 20 minutes before 2 kind ladies gave me a lift. Whatever happened to the 'wartime spirit'? The biggest danger on the roads are selfish and naive motorists who drive too fast in the conditions, especially 4WDs who think they are snow proof, only to find that their brakes are mortal like everyone else.

The fact that Haeadington Hill was shut does not mean that services along other routes should be stopped. I think that with this decision Stagecoach may well have lost a lot of future customers where there is a choice between the 2 companies.

Well done Oxford Bus Company for trying to keep the city moving rather than giving up and retreating back to the depot as Stagecoach did.

As an American who lived in Oxford for a year (but never saw it snow like this), but now reside in the Portland Oregon metro area (where we saw feet of snow in December), don't these busses use snow chains? Here the busses use snow chains and go on "snow routes" where they avoid the hilly areas.

Snow chains, haven't seen them for very many years, they were inclined to rip the tyres when they came into contact with the tarmac as the snow turned to slush. On hard-packed snow studded tyres are a better bet. My thoughts are why are there so many broken-down vehicles out there? Distinct lack of maintenance and TLC being shown to the overused and over abused workhorses I would suspect..

No, Miranda, they don't. Unlike Oregon, we get very little snow, and the snow we do get is usually gone within a few hours.

The snow this week has been exceptional - a once in 20 year event.

So we don't spend millions on something we never use - except trident nuclear weapons, but that's another story....
