A school social worker who fantasised about pupils and downloaded child porn walked free from court yesterday.

John Wagstaff, who worked at Northfield School in Blackbird Leys, Oxford, slashed his wrists and took an overdose of Viagra pills before begging police to arrest him.

Oxford Crown Court heard the 56-year-old rang headteacher Mark Blencowe in June and asked him to bring police to his flat at the Knights Road school.

When they arrived, Wagstaff pulled out a box of indecent photographs of boys from under his bed and told them he should not be working with children.

Henry James, prosecuting, said: "More alarming, together with these photos were a number of posters depicting photos of boys who were either at, or had been at, the school with a number of prices for services available from them.

"There was also a very long essay about the boys in his care having sex with each other or him.

"All the boys have been interviewed and there is no indication he ever touched them."

Mr James said 1,083 indecent digital images were found in Wagstaff's possession, most of them categorised at the least serious level one, but five rated as the most serious level five. He also had 432 indecent pictures he had printed out.

Wagstaff, of no fixed address, admitted three charges of possessing, and seven of making, indecent photographs of children.

The court heard Wagstaff started working at the school as a teaching assistant 15 years ago through a rehabilitation scheme for former alcoholics.

He then became a residential social worker.

Alistair Grainger, defending, said: "Fortunately, no children have been hurt as a result of him and no children have been interfered with."

Handing him a 24-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, Judge Terence Maher said: "It was a rather unpleasant, nauseating fantasy world which you inhabited.

"Simply to send you to prison for what would be a short period would be an utter waste of time.

"The purpose of sentencing is not simply to punish. One hopes that it will also rehabilitate."

Judge Maher also ordered Wagstaff to attend a sex offenders' group, sign the sex offenders' register and banned him from owning or using a computer and having contact with children.

Damian Griffiths, Oxfordshire County Council's assistant head of safeguarding, said: "The school, the police and the county council acted swiftly to remove Mr Wagstaff from his post when this situation came to light.

"Mr Wagstaff had been fully CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked and those checks did not highlight any problems.

"It is difficult to comment on policies and practices from 15 years ago. Stringent policies on recruitment to posts that involve dealing with children are currently in place."

Mother-of-two Amber Williams, of Field Avenue, Blackbird Leys, was angry Wagstaff was not jailed. She said: "You cannot rehabilitate these people. A leopard cannot change its spots. You get more for shoplifting these days."

school didnt care as they let me in the hands of this person to go out days with him alone and never even told me about his background.

School house let him do sleep in had all the chance to do what he wanted them nights to any of us

Worst school and school house i have ever been to / met in my whole live

This has upset me for life now and this will never be forgotten

Letting him out with me alone he could of done anything he wanted then and i would of been to scared to say anything at that age and to defenceless :(

there was something strange the days and nights i was at the house he kept hugging me in the living room (also known as TV Room). Why on earth the school let me out with this person alone i dont know but they couldnt of been thinking very well. Even with how dangerus he is (e.g slashing his wrists) he could of murdered me then what would of the school or school house done bet they wouldnt of said anything or try find away out of it

Its pathetic and i got invited to a reunion at the school house couple years back with him still there then good job i didnt go.

I will never step foot near northfield house nor northfield school in my life

At least he has had the courage to face up to his feelings and has taken the rational step and sought help for his condition.

I think the fact he tried to kill himself and the obvious desperation he felt is a sign that he did not make a deliberate choice in this area, it is simply one of nature's sick jokes.

God knows what kind of life he had to live knowing these facts about himself.

He should not be working with children, but, as he did nothing wrong and harmed nobody else he should not be prosecuted either, merely given medical and psychological help and guidance.

why did he only say something in june why not before when all us others could of been at danger

Why was there nothing on his CRB if there was why was nothing done about it?

In fact why did the council give him such job?

I was forced to live in the school house i never had a choice?

They should not put anyone anywhere thats such people are goning to be put at danger mostly at a special needs school as i was forced i was also at danger.

i hopefully can get a meeting with the headteacher at the school if not i will go speak to the MP adrew smith about it because i want to know why most importantly they allowed me out with him on my own in public. :(

also @ alan page > He may of not harmed anyone but does not give them the rights for someone with these sort of acts to take school pupils out of school during lesson time. This does also not give them the right to allow him to work at the school house where there are / was defenceless pupils at the house he could of done anything during sleep in shifts.

As for you saying he should not be prosecuted. But the school should for allowing pupils such as myself out in the hands of a dangerus man in public with no supervision for the whole day thats from first lesson until last lesson.

I had to live with this man for many years at the school house :(

As for the police saying thay have interviewd all pupils that was / are at the house was my picture in the photos he had i dont know i yet again have not been told anything i have not even been interviewed so myself i reckon the police aint interviewed anyone yet they are prob just saying that to cover them selfs while they solve other cases

The only time the school / council / police will care is when one is hurt and have evidence to prove such case until then the they will just leave the case to rott

Tell me, before the story broke did you have any idea about this mans proclivities?
Did he touch you in any way or give you any indication that his interest was other than tutorial?

If your answer is no then how was anybody else going to know anything? The only way they could tell was if he'd a previous conviction on a related charge.

The problem is that if his record was clear and it was something nobody but himself knew about then there would be no grounds for removing him from the school.

It sounds to me as if the issue had been building up with him for many years and he had some kind of breakdown as a result.

Its now come to a head and it is now up to the authorities to monitor and keep him out of situations where he would be vulnerable.

So did you report him then? If not why not?

The difficult thing is to define the intention of a hug. It may have simply been meant as comforting.
Ive had times in the past where somebody has confided in me some personal tragedy and I have put an arm around them as they broke down.

Nothing remotely sexual about it at all.

It is a very difficult line to draw. But if you felt uncomfortable you could have told somebody surely.

And there was nobody there you could confide in about this?

Were there not other kids there with similar complaints that you could have all made together?

This does sound decidely nonconsensual and forceful to me. I'm glad he's out of that place.
