Youngsters celebrated the street life of their Oxford estate with singing, dancing and rap performances.

More than 100 children and teenagers went to Barton's second annual Urban Artz festival at St Mary's Church in Bayswater Road yesterday.

The free event, organised by the Families Reunited community development project, featured a T-shirt design workshop, a racing car simulator, graffiti art, music, dancing and a barbecue.

Youth worker Robert Joliffe said many of the youngsters had helped organise the event as well as taking part in the day itself.

He said: "We are doing things with art forms we think young people would really like to do."

The day ended with the unveiling of a totem pole made of recycled household items that had been built by the youngsters to reflect the spirit of Barton.

Cheney School pupil Jacob Fleetwood, 15, of Bassett Road, said: "These kind of events make the community stronger and the adults get to see kids doing what they do best."

Glenys Goodenough, 67, of Brampton Road, said: "We should have something like this every six months at least.

"You meet people, you see the kids happy and the dancing is fantastic."

It's sad that children are encouraged to express themselves through the 'street' styles of predominantly black American gang culture.

Sir Trevor Phillips has blamed the 'all gold chains and no brains' culture for the underachievement of black boys and many black speakers have condemned rap 'culture' for glorifying violence, greed and nihilism and for demeaning women.

Hard to see the benefit of encouraging it amongst young working class British youngsters then really, but then to the Leftist do-gooders involved in most of these sort of 'workshops' anything is better than teaching young British people about their own history, culture and traditions which they should rightly be proud of.

Its a shame really, back in the late 80s and early 90s, rap used to be about political movement, then it all went wrong and its about how many **** you have, how much gold you have on yout teeth, and selling ringtones.

The music itself SHOULD be encouraged, but not in this form, its giving these kids an unrealistic view on how their life will turn out if the act like pr!cks

and people how spell any word with a "z" at the end should be locked away

Well said, DanOxford.

How much did it cost? Who paid?

How much to re-train the 'yoof' workers to provide worthwhile projects?
