WEATHER: Severe warning in place

Oxford and the surrounding area has been given a severe weather warning this morning as Met Office forecasters predicted heavy rain.

About 20mm (just over three-quarters of an inch) to 40mm (1.6 inches) of rain is expected to fall across Oxfordshire, about two thirds of the average amount of rainfall for September, 61mm.

There are Floodwatches on three tributaries of the River Thames - the Evenlode, Ray and Windrush, according to the Environment Agency, with flooding of low-lying land and roads expected.

Met Office forecaster Stephen Holman urged drivers to take care on the roads, and said: "There will be persistent rain throughout the day and the trend throughout the morning is that it will become heavier.

"Then there will be clearer weather pushing through from the South West in the first part of the afternoon, but following that there will scattered heavy showers, and possibly some thunderstorms.

"It's going to be a very unsettled day and the ground will be very wet because we have already had some rain overnight."

This is Global warming - the gulf stream is being affected hence making UK colder and wetter, time to move to aus!

...where there are severe water shortages and droughts have ended the lives of many farmers.

I was there last year and saw the devastation the lack of rain has caused. Dreadful. Britain may be cold and wet but at least we have running water and no rations. Yet.

Thank goodness I followed the advice of all those gardening programmes on TV and replanted my garden with expensive drought resistant plants, its absolutely parched I can tell you.

What I want to know is this: What will the Met Office do when we are actually expecting some actual, real severe weather , along the lines of, you know, a foot of snow, gale force winds, or, heaven forfend, a heatwave? A bit of heavy rain is hardly 'severe', is it?

Where do the weather people get their imformation from, As we have had flooding of low-lying land, For over a week, The lakes are well up so is the windrush, It will not take much for a major flood
