A surgeon and mother-of-three who suffered from depression took her own life in a hotel room in Oxford, an inquest was told.

Emma Hormbrey, 39, of Mill Street, Stanton St John, was found dead in a room at the Holiday Inn Express, in Grenoble Road, next to the Kassam Stadium, on April 2.

The plastic surgeon, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was signed off work at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, cut her wrists with a razor blade.

Her husband Dr Philip Hormbrey told the hearing on Wednesday that he had no idea she was planning to kill herself.

He added: "She was a clever, beautiful lady."

Mrs Hormbrey's psychiatrist Dr Ashley Rule said despite a failed suicide attempt in February and ongoing mental health problems, the likelihood of another suicide attempt at the time of her death "was not considered to be high".

Holiday Inn Express receptionist Nikolett Nemeth remembered Mrs Hormbrey checking into the hotel the day before she was found dead.

She said: "She said she was really tired and just wanted to sleep. I could see she was tired."

Dc Kevin Parsons, of Oxford CID, said: "I was informed razor blades had been found. When the body was moved, it became obvious there was much more blood than first thought and she had cuts to both wrists."

Oxfordshire coroner Nicholas Gardiner said: "I'm in no doubt Mrs Hormbrey took her own life."
