Biggest ever litter blitz planned

Waste chiefs are urging residents to join forces and target litter hotspots in Oxfordshire.

Oxford city councillor John Tanner, chairman of Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP), told the Oxford Mail he wanted to spearhead the biggest clean-up in the county's history.

The former Lord Mayor of Oxford said next month councils would lend litter-picking equipment to anyone who wanted to organise a clean-up.

The initiative forms part of the Big Tidy Up, a national litter blitz running throughout September organised by Keep Britain Tidy.

In Oxfordshire, councils spend an estimated £4.25m on litter-picking and flytipping annually. The Vale of White Horse District Council alone spent more than £1m.

Nationally, UK taxpayers fork out £500m a year to clean up 30 million tonnes of litter from our streets.

Mr Tanner said: "We can all do our bit in September by not dropping litter and picking up the rubbish left by other people, but why not organise a rubbish clear-up yourself?

"Cleaner streets and parks in Oxfordshire look good and save taxpayers' money."

The OWP represents the county's four district councils, Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council. Spokesman Paul Mocroft said collectively councils already worked hard to keep the county looking clean.

He added: "The problem we have in Oxfordshire is that we are not an untidy place - we are one of the cleanest counties in the country.

"It's hard to motivate people because it's such a lovely place to live, but there's always room for improvement.

"We are not spotless and we really want to target hotspots. Litter costs everybody."

Mr Mocroft said a big clean-up event was already in the pipeline for Oxford at the end of next month - along the same lines as Oxford Civic Society's spring clean in March which saw 11.5 tonnes of litter collected in the city over just one weekend. He said: "We are hoping to involve the whole county and organise a big event in each district."

Councils are particularly encouraging people who take part in a litter blitz to separate litter for recycling before it is collected.

So let me get this right, we have paid local authorities via taxes etc to do this work and yet they now want us to do it for them. What will they be doing with the money we have already handed over ?

We were until mass migration(especially from Asia) was forced upon us.

The fact of the matter is that countries like India,China,Pakistan etc are filthy places, mainly caused by overpopulation/pover
ty.

Therefore most of their immigrants are not used to being tidy and they bring this filthy mentality with them.

That is the main reason oxfordshire is a more untidy (to put it mildly) than it was 10 years ago.

If you doubt me as being wrong, just visit the enclaves around Cowley for example where these communities live in ghetto like conditions.

Unfortunately i live in one so know all too well what i am talking about.

Rubbish strewn around their properties, filthy houses,Cars never get cleaned...........

And lets not forget the local chavs who (due to not being disciplined) think it is ok to throw rubbish around.

Everywhere has a rubbish problem in Oxford. We have too many people in the city and the local services are at breaking point.

Blackbird leys has a particually bad rubbish problem due to a lot of the residents having a "victim mentality" and expecting the council to do everything for them (a side effect of the benefits culture, almost like drug addiction).

Also layabouts (which Blackbird Leys has more of per head of popualation than most other parts of the city)are usually lazy scruffy untidy people in general, hence compound the rubbish problem.

Any one taking part could meet & start at No. 87 Magdalen Road. Probably the filthiest place on earth, let by messers Hutton & Parker. Then move across the road where you will find a load drunks getting even more **** at the local store, as they stand in there squalor of empties & fag butts. I could go on for pages.

Palestine is not occupied Mr' Ison,it belongs again to the people who have, for thousands of years, walked the land there.

God bless Israel.

I think the fact that other Arab countries do not help their "Palestinian brothers" (and some even openly kill then as in Lebanon last year),shows that they do not have a case to claim the land, even in the eyes of other Arabs. They are seen as second class citizens if lucky in other Arab nations.

This region was nothing more than pure desert before the Jews returned, now it is an example to the world, of sucess in Science/Technology.

Mary says the only litter that needs collecting is the rubbish the bin men have refused to take "'cos the wheelie bin is 42mm past its collection point".
All the council need do is allow the bin men some initiative in dealing with problems. Such as removing rubbish, regardless of the fact it doesn't comply with regulation 784, paragraph 3 of the cop out clause in section 7, paragraph 6. Which specifically states; Don't do more than is required than is stated in regulation 784, paragraph 3.

I am not a racist,i love everybody equally but the truth is sometimes hard to stomach and people do not like hearing it....

Are you talking about either the cleanliness issue or the Palestinian one?.

You wished me cancer, now that is not nice is it? what does that make you.....and is it worse than what i said?,these are the questions you need to ask yourself.

I my job i work in all ares of oxford. It is not a clean cit it is a dump. I see nice new houses and flats in the affordable housing schemes, with broken toys and bags and bags of muck outside. You go in and the few rooms with light bulbs are filthy. Clothes scattered about and cast off take away wrappings strewn about. But there is always lots of empty fag packets and alcohol containers about. Not to mention the large telly and games machine on the floor. We give people money hand over fist, we do not encourage any sort of repayment for the free cash and this leads to a society of sloth. Why bother cleaning up after yourself, when if you let it get bad enough the council will come round and do it for you. Why could it noe be that to get your free house and benefits you have to keep the property to a certain standard. And then enforce any rule breaking by cutting benefits. once the stella runs out and the sky box is cut off then the trolls may start to tidy up a bit.
We have student ghetos and the junk around these areas includes old bikes and clothing.
But its not just the social under class that drop litter, they just do it where they reside. The state of the city centre of a Sunday morning is a disgrace. Filth and vomit all over the place. And a small army of hard working council employees up at an ungodly hour to clean up the filth from the night before.
Society as a whole is sick, I dont know wht the cure is. but it is not politicaly correct bleeding heart liberals schemes to re educate people. We need rules that are enforced by the council and police. We need moral guidance for the youth fro ther own family not the bloody goverment. People need to understand YOU are responsible for your actions. Not ADHD, or the fact someone bullied you once, or that you tried drugs and liked it.

This country is morrally corrupt and need to wake up and smell the coffe. A sign that an animal is sick is when it fouls its own nest. That is what we all do, soem to a greater extent than others. We need a change in our society, not silly schemes involving volunteers. Lets start getting people who dont work picking up the filth, offenders on tags. If the prisons are full lets get em working.

There are good people in Oxford and on the estates. They will be the ones helping out, but then they probably did not make the mess in the first place.

I thought maybe I'd join in, Have a little wonder around the street and pick up some litter... but then it crossed my mind what I would do with this litter? I could put in my green bin but then I'd run out of space due to the fornightly collections.. I could also leave it in a black bag next to my bin but then I'd probably get fined! So after much thought, Sod it!

You could ask Matthew Arnold School to teach its schoolchidlren to respect their area and pick up litter - you can literally follow where a pupil has been from the litter trails. Try Dean court Alley for example and Botley. Also though, its not just the kids - the grown ups do not set any examples - people of all denominations and age throw rubbish into rare woods and think they can get away with it in Orchard Road Botley, especially two men - YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE and every take away shop should have its own litter picker to pick up after the late night kebab and chips.

First of all the council trashes the city by introducing fortnightly collections and then they wonder why we have all this litter. Return to a weekly collection of refuse which would solve most of the problem.
