Students and staff at a college in Oxford have taken part in a charity event which sees people sleep rough for a night.

Sixteen Uniformed Public Services students from City of Oxford College and University Centre joined five members of staff from Activate Learning for The Great Tommy Sleepout, camping out overnight on college grounds.

The group was raising money for the Royal British Legion’s BRIT Challenge and Activate Learning’s mental health fund, MindGreen.

The students also decided to complete a circuit of 100 press ups, 200 sit ups, and 200 burpees every hour, on the hour.

Rob Brandon, public service and outdoor professional teacher, said: "We chose to participate in this challenge as the cause is very close to both tutors and CEO Gary Headland’s heart.

"This opportunity could not be passed upon as we prepare for our expedition in Dartmoor in the future.

“The sleepout helped students to understand the vital skills to be out at night but also the dangers that may arise."

Gary Headland, chief executive at Activate Learning, said: "By sleeping out under the stars, we weren’t just raising funds; we were raising awareness and standing in solidarity with those facing homelessness and mental health challenges.

"I was so proud of our caring and resilient learners."

The event raised £150 for the Royal British Legion, with excess funds dedicated to MindGreen.
