HUNDREDS of people in small groups all across Oxford gave the city a spring clean over the weekend - and filled scores of bags with rubbish.

The OxClean drive by Oxford Civic Society, supported by The Oxford Times, saw young and old getting together to clear the city's litter hot spots.

And children played a major part in the effort.

Green city councillor Elise Benjamin was among a small throng who helped clear up the Manzil Way play area off Cowley Road.

She said: "The best thing about it was the number of children who got involved.

"They were amazed at the amount of litter that was strewn around.

"I'm sure they got the message that being a litter lout is anti-social."

At Summertown car park, there was a revival of the Wombles - the children's television series that saw furry creatures clearing up litter on Wimbledon Common.

Together with the Rev Willy Pryor and his wife Elizabeth, a group of boys from Summer Fields School cleared up Summertown car park.

Mr Pryor was the leader and, naturally, dressed up as Great Uncle Bulgaria for the session.

Bishop Jeremy Dick led the congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints in cleaning up an area adjoining Redbridge park and ride off Abingdon Road.

He said: "There were 55 of us and we filled 135 black bags full of rubbish as well as picking up dumped television sets, car batteries and other less savoury things.

"It was a very successful operation and at the end, when we had all cleaned up, we enjoyed a mass barbecue, which was great fun.

"In all, it was a very worthwhile venture."

Members of the Rotary Club of Oxford North tackled the hedgerows along a stretch of the northern bypass from Marston flyover to Banbury Road roundabout.

They filled 14 sacks and collected a lot of broken glass.

And while the roads and hedgerows were becoming visibly less cluttered, the river was not neglected.

Members of the Falcon Rowing Club were in action clearing up around their boathouse in Meadow Lane and on the river between Iffley and Folly Bridge.

One of the organisers, Laura Giles, said: "We did as much as we could from the three boats which took part in the clean-up, collecting bits in the river and along the banks as far as we could reach.

"There were lots of litter, plastic bags, vodka bottles and other drinks bottles.

"We were also helped by a group of disabled canoeists and were very pleased with our efforts."

Organisers hope the litter pick and clean-up can become an annual event with more members of the public taking part next year.

Is this not what we pay our council tax for??
Do I now get a rebate??

No, Andy, your council tax pays for "managers" and other unnecessary council staff, not to mention their trips abroad and expenses.

Rebate? Sorry mate, they've spent it all already.

Your council tax does pay for clearing up the streets but volume of rubbish now covering the city means theses extra measures need to be taken. Andy did you volunteer to help out?
perhaps you would like to contribute more tax to help clean up...ummm thought not!.....it's not the council who fly tips and leaves used syringes etc every where the blame lies at the feet of those lazy slobs who mess up our beautiful city.

If we weren't such a nation of dirty, lazy slobs we wouldn't need to have anybody picking up rubbish, most of which is probably dropped by whinging council tax payers in the first place.

Jon..You really should read what you write before posting it..it does make you look daft.
On one hand you tell me to help out or pay more tax then blame it all on the lazy slobs!!
So I got to pay more for the lazy slobs while they pay nothing. The fact is, it is the councils responsiblity to clean up not mine!
If there was less waste to collect does they mean I pay less tax?? According to you it does.

If anyone is due a rebate on council tax it's the 1500 cheerful folk who turned out, often in rain and biting wind, this weekend to clean up the mess. I took part in three different 'picks' and everyone was so willing, we had a good time, so please don't knock community spirit. Litter has doubled in this country in the last 10 years.

I agree with Chris and Jon, it's the 'I pay my taxes for someone else to clear up litter' attitude that means our country is covered in litter in the first place. So much easier to declare that some level of government will take care of it, than to take responsibility yourself. Well done to those that took part - wish we had the same spirit of citizenship in Reading!

If people worlwide weren't such pigs, it wouldnt be necessary to spend your weekend cleaning up after others. It is no different over here in the USA.

I got soaked on the Saturday session with the Brookes students, but it was quite fun. Could probably have had a half decent party with the amount of alcohol we found - I found one Tesco bag with a six pack unopened discarded under a bush!

But those who talk about the slovenly attitude that leads to this are quite right - once you start looking for rubbish you can soon find tons of the stuff - from cans to little bits of paper that wouldn't take a minute to properly dispose of. Even is areas where the city council do clear out the banks and ditches occasionally we found stuff half buried - I doubt it would be possible to staff the sort of resource required to really "deep clean" like this weekend out of the public purse.
