A BANNED driver sped through Wantage before crashing his car and flipping it on to the roof, leaving his girlfriend lucky to be alive.

Lee Blackman, 21, was handed an eight-month suspended jail sentence at Oxford Crown Court today for dangerous driving and driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Cathy Olliver, prosecuting, told the court Blackman - who has twice previously been banned from driving - drove a "souped-up" Ford Escort through Wantage, making dangerous overtaking manoeuvres at speeds up to 60mph last September.

He lost control on a corner on the A417 and crashed into road signs and a lamppost, leaving his 18-year-old girlfriend with a fractured vertebra, she added.

Judge Tom Corrie banned Blackman, who lives at a building site at Sainsbury's in Wantage, from driving for two years, ordered him to do 100 hours' community service, imposed a supervision order for 18 months and issued eight points on his licence.

Judge Corrie added: "You come across as an arrogant young man with no respect for the law. I am hoping it is possible you might grow up a bit having come so close to causing serious injury, if not death, to someone you love."

I know we're not supposed to pass judgement without hearing all the details, two sides to every story etc etc but I have to say ""What an ar***ole".

Let's hope the girlfriend had the sense to ditch him.

I agree - what a complete loser. This "sentence" won't deter an arragant a**e like him. The only thing that will stop him is him wrapping his car round a lampost. Let's hope it just involves him and not some other poor innocent person.

Now, he had no insurance or licence yet he got an eight-month suspended jail sentence?! Had it been someone who has a licence/insurance and is law abiding, they would have been sent down! when are the judges going to clamp down and send scum like this away for a very long time! I have to pay my insurance/tax/pay for driving licence, otherwise i feel guilty! makes me sick people like this are out there.

Now let me see, driving while disqualified, no insurance, twice the speed limit in a built up area, crashes the car damaging a road sign and lampost, injures another person and all he gets is 100 hours community dossing, 8 points on his licence (which he doesn't have as he is already banned) and 2 years no driving (which obviously worked last time).

No wonder the police are clamping down on people parking on kerbs and double yellow lines. They obviously need to make sure the real criminals are dealt with correctly!

A complete waste of tax payers money. He has learned nothing from previous times.
Another article in this edition states " Four drivers also had their cars seized and were handed £200 fixed penalties for driving while uninsured."

And we give this "ARROGANT, ALREADY BANNED DRIVER" another 8 points.

Imagine if he had hit a small child instead of hurting a 'loved one'.

Lock these people up, before they kill someone.

And to Judge Tom Corrie I say - 'I hope it's not your child!"
