POLICE stopped 19 drivers in a speed check in Charlbury today.

Officers from Roads Policing, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Road Safety Officers from Oxfordshire County Council were on Sturt Road between 8am and 10am.

They stopped 19 drivers exceeding the 30mph speed limit but driving below 39mph and they were issued fixed penalty notices of £60 and three penalty points.

All 19 drivers were given the chance to have their ticket cancelled if they spoke to a road safety officer for advice and education on the dangers of speeding, an offer which they all accepted.

One driver also had his car seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act for driving with no insurance.

PC Mark Pilling, road safety constable for Oxfordshire, said: "This is the third roadside check as part of Operation Pride so far this month.

"We will be running a number of operations throughout the year to target speeding, seatbelts, and mobile phone use."

"Some motorists may believe that exceeding the speed limit by a few miles an hour is not a big deal but it continues to be raised as one of the residents' main concerns and it is important that we tackle the issue."
