A GROUP of protesters have forced their way into the Oxford Union and barricaded themselves inside the debating chamber.

About 20 people are thought to have managed to get into the building in St Michael's Street and are staging a sit-in protest.

BNP leader Nick Griffin and Holocaust denier David Irving were invited to speak at the Union's Free Speech Forum.

The invitations sparked huge controversy with opinions across Oxford divided on whether the pair should be given a platform.

A thousand anti-fascist protesters roared their opposition outside the Union - including Respect MP George Galloway.

Campaigners from Unite Against Fascism, Unison and Jewish student groups gathered outside Oxford Union armed with placards and loudhailers.

Representatives from Unison were joined by campaigners from Unite, as well as Jewish and Muslim groups.

Weyman Bennett, of Unite Against Fascism, said: "It's up to the good people here to stand together against fascism and say we don't want in this or any country."

Student rabbi and Oxford Union member David Mitchell said: "It's utterly horrendous. I can't believe Oxford Union is giving credibility to these people and I will be resigning my membership in the morning."

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told the Commons earlier today it was up to the debating society to make its own decision about allowing Mr Irving and Mr Griffin to attend the freedom of speech event.

Ms Smith, an Oxford graduate, speaking in Home Office Questions, said: "I thoroughly deplore the sentiments, the expressed views and the actions of both of the gentlemen due to be speaking at the Oxford Union society this evening."

She said there was legislation which she hoped would be used if they "overstepped the mark".

Conservative frontbencher Julian Lewis, MP for New Forest East, resigned his life membership of the Oxford Union in protest at the decision to invite the pair to speak.

don't worry chaps. my boys in blue have been ordered to crack as many wolly leftie heads as possible.

Failing that, we will hose them down and throw some bars of soap - they will scatter.

I thought we had defeated fascism in 1945! This evening's sickening events demonstrate that fascism is alive and well and has been coached into the city by groups having no respect for democracy or the rights of others. I don't know what Mr. Griffin of the BNP expected to get out of this evening - but the nazi-style behaviour of the so-called "anti-fascists" can only leave him rubbing his hands in glee - and justifiably so! The lesson to be drawn from this by all impartial observers is - we now know who the fascists are and I'm afraid it's not Mr. Griffin!

This episode has just sharply revealed how this Country has been undermined by the Loony Left with their rabid intolerance of anyone who expresses a view other than their own. And please- what on EARTH would most 'Muslim Groups' know about democracy? The members of the Union voted 2:1 in favour of this debate taking place- a democratic decision clearly unacceptable to Weyman Bennett and all the other self- appointed guardians of our right to be bossed around by those who would issue us with ID cards, deny us an EU referendum, build on our greenbelt to house the consequences of their open door immigration policy, employ 9000 illegal immigrants in security jobs and cry 'racist!' when anyone says enough is enough. Thankfully the backlash against the anti-British, anti-democracy and anti-freedom thought police is now happening.

What a load of rubbish, a talk about free speech where a bunch of protestors dont actully want to hear anything that really challenges their beliefs. where is the free speech in that?

Relevent to the above relates to press censorship. A friend of mine who was a shop steward defending colleagues rights & happens to be Israelli Jew had very little support from his organisation. He had to employ a local legal & went onto win 2 further claims under the RDA & had a large financial settlement also legal costs.( 3 RDA claims were won in total) The organisation has made it clear if the person went to reclaim legal monies - instead of giving support for their failings - he would be fought.
Branch members raised complaints & the organisations response ? - to unilaterally close the branch.
Rules & procedures for doing so dismissed -
Tried raising subject through local media - nothing yet were willing previously to print high profile articles regarding the same person.

I believe Trade Unions receive public monies to promote Equality - the figure given to me as being £1.8 million

Freedom of speech in the organisation I have mentioned is non existance as is democracy & equal ops.
There should be a full investigation & the full cost to the public the organisation in question has cost should be re-paid.
