AN OXFORD church's modern extension has been shortlisted for a national architecture prize.

St Michael & All Angels in Summertown could win the presidents' award in the 2018 Church Architecture Awards.

It is one of six projects to have made the shortlist for the accolade which recognises new church buildings and re-orderings, extensions or alterations to existing church buildings.

A new front extension was created at the church, adding an entrance hall, kitchen, toilets, stores and an office.

The National Churches Trust and the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association, who run the awards, said: "The new hall is a lofty space filled with light and with its own special character.

"This is a space that mediates between the secular and the sacred."

St Michael & All Angels will go up against a new chapel on the Ardnamurchan Estate in the Highlands of Scotland as well as the extension of Ealing Green church in Ealing, London for a chance to win the award.

Winning entries will be revealed at an awards ceremony at St Mellitus College, London on Thursday, November, 1.

Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester will announce the winner of the presidents' award which is awarded on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association president and the National Churches Trust’s joint presidents, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.

The church, off the Banbury Road, was opened in 1909.

It is run by the Revd Gavin Knight, who has been the Vicar of St Michael's since September 2011.
