BRITISH Telecom contractors sparked a series of complaints in East Oxford after leaving trenches inadequately guarded in March 1990.

City council officers were called out three times at night to make safe trenches left by workmen installing new cable ducts in Marston Road, Iffley Road, and Dawson Street – pictured here.

On March 14, our man Alan Carter reported that BT was being sent a bill by the council to cover the cost of sending the officers out.

A BT spokesman apologised through the Oxford Mail for inconvenience caused to the public and added that the complaints were being investigated.
