ESTATE councillors want to change the name of their parish council as a way of reaching out to people who assume it doesn't represent them.

Names including the Leys Community Council and the Blackbird and Greater Leys Parish Council have been put forward to replace the existing Blackbird Leys Parish Council.

Councillor John Lowe said he had spoken to people in Greater Leys who told him they didn't know about the parish council, or that its remit extended to their part of the estate.

It comes as some residents have voiced concerns that people in Blackbird Leys get more investment and support than those on the other side of Fry's Hill Park.

The estate is split into two wards - Blackbird Leys and Northfield Brook - by Oxford City Council but on maps it is divided between the Blackbird and Greater Leys parts.

Some councillors, including chairman John Dillon, said the name Blackbird Leys should be seen as encompassing the entire estate.

Resident Brian Lester said Greater Leys was only created by the post office as a way of differentiating between new homes built 20 years ago.

He said he had lived on the estate for 60 years but more recently found that his address had been moved into Northfield Brook.

Councillors agreed to look at the financial implications of the move with suggestions any proposals could be put to a parish-wide poll.
