PUBS in Oxford are cheering on the England team as the World Cup continues to boost beer sales.

Elisha Agar, 22, a member of the bar staff at the Eurobar Hotel in George Street, said the pub would be packed out for the semi-final against Croatia.

She said: “Hundreds of fans watch the World Cup games on our big screens - when England play we make a crazy amount of money in just a few hours.

“We took thousands for the Colombia game - it was great for us when it went to extra time.

“My favourite player is Jordan Pickford because he has made so many great saves - if England make it through to the final we will have to order in extra beer.”

Kriss Sprules, 33, from Cutteslowe, team leader at The Crown off Cornmarket, said the World Cup was giving the pub’s takings a big boost.

He added: “It’s a really good atmosphere when the games are on.

“My sister Cassie was born on the day of England’s last semi-final in 1990 so I missed the game.

“When England are playing the place gets packed out but the other games are good as well. We had Swedish and Mexican fans drinking tequila together.”
