SCHOOLCHILDREN in Oxford and their parents joined the fight against air pollution yesterday with a mass procession to and from school.
About 100 children and parents formed a walking, scooting, skating and cycling procession along the roads around St Ebbe's Primary School for Clean Air Day.
The procession was organised to reduce the high levels of pollution found around the school and highlight the problem of the toxic air some children face in Oxford's schools.
Parents say the air in the area regularly breaks legal limits for air pollution.
The school in Whitehouse Road organised the procession to encourage parents to leave their cars at home and walk their children to school instead.
One parent said: "This morning's trip to school was like no other."
St Ebbe's falls just outside the proposed area for Oxford's zero emissions zone.
Elsewhere in the city yesterday, drivers were encouraged to switch off their idling engines.
Councillors gathered near The Plain roundabout - one of the most polluted parts of the city - to mark Clean Air Day.
