A MAN who sexually abused two young children at an Oxford hotel has been jailed.

Albert Campbell-Thomas, of Baydon Close, Trowbridge, had denied two counts of sexual assault by touching of the two victims, neither of whom can be named for legal reasons, at the Jurys Inn hotel, Godstow Road.

Despite his claim of innocence, the jury roundly convicted him as the 65-year old’s four-day trial came to an end at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

The panel of four women and eight men took five hours and 24 minutes of deliberations to reach their unanimous decision and find him guilty of the two counts.

During the trial, prosecutors said that Campbell-Thomas had been at the Oxford hotel one night last year when he sexually assaulted the two children, both aged under-10 at the time.

The trial heard that the offences only came to light when the children later told their parents about what had happened, who went on to report the incident to police.

Jurors also heard a recorded police interview carried out with one of the young victims, who described the assault using child-like terms to officers at interview.

He said: “I was trying to budge him (Campbell-Thomas) off. I accidentally budged him in the face and it halted him.”

He went on to tell police that the assault happened at first ‘four times’ and then again twice more during the ordeal.

Another child, a girl, was also sexually assaulted by Campbell-Thomas that night at the same hotel in which he performed a sex act.

Sentencing, Judge Nigel Daly gave him 42 months in prison for both counts, jail terms ordered to run concurrently.

He must also sign the sex offenders register for life and pay a victim surcharge of £170.
