TEMPORARY recycling banks will be placed around the city to add to the £100,000 raised for the British Heart Foundation last year from students clearing out their rooms.

Oxford City Council's recycling team has been putting recycling banks near popular student areas around Oxford University and Oxford Brookes for the past six years.

As students clear out their rooms for the year and drop off clothes, shoes, books and electrical goods, they are then donated to the BHF to raise money.

Last year the project raised around £100,000 after more than 57 tonnes were collected.

The banks will be situated in Morrell Avenue, East Avenue, Gray's Road and Old Road junction, Magdalen Road Church and on the corner of Cripley Road and Botley Road.

Recycling and waste manager at Oxford Direct Services, Ian Bourton, said: "As part of last year’s campaign collection banks were placed around the city in highly populated student areas and banks and collection points were provided to the Oxford Brookes' halls of residence and many of the Oxford University colleges.

"There was an overwhelming uptake. The amount of stock generated for the British Heart foundation was about 57 tonnes, which raised around £100,000."

The banks will remain until the end of July - the BHF will empty them regularly and the city council will monitor any fly tipping at the sites.

The materials collected will provide funds to support students studying heart disease at Oxford University.
