A MAN aged 86 was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital with 'serious injuries' after a crash in Deddington.

The collision was one of two major crashes in North Oxfordshire this morning, which were both attended by the air ambulance and prompted lengthy road closures.

South Central Ambulance Service said it was called at 9.46am to a 'serious collision' between two vehicles on the A4260 Oxford Road in Deddington, between Bicester and Banbury.

Spokesman David Gallagher said: "We sent two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance to the incident.

"One patient, an 86-year-old male with serious injuries, was treated at the scene before being taken by road to the major trauma centre at the John Radcliffe."

The road remains closed between Somerton Road (North Aston) and Chapmans Lane in Deddington.

Police said the road will likely be closed for several more hours as investigation work takes place.

In a separate crash in the same part of the county, a tanker lorry and car smashed at 8am on the A41 at Blackthorn.

The road was shut both ways between the B4011 and Station Road junctions, but had reopened by 2.30pm.

A SCAS spokesman said: "This was a serious collision.

"We sent an ambulance, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and the Thames Valley air Ambulance to the scene."

Thames Valley Police said the crash involved a tanker - large lorries used to transport gas or liquid such as fuel - and the driver of the car was taken to hospital.

No one else was injured and no one was arrested, the force has confirmed.

Neither police nor SCAS would give further details about the driver or his or her condition.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area, but it is understood the road is now open.
