AN Oxford fish and chip shop has been named as one of the best 50 in the UK.

Posh Fish, in London Road, Headington, was the only fish and chip shop in the county to make the list.

To make the top 50 restaurants across the UK had to impress a mystery diner who visited the shop unannounced and marked it on more than 40 aspects including the quality of food, customer service, cleanliness and value for money.

The pass mark to be included on the list, which was organised by leading trade publication Fry Magazine, was set at 96 per cent and Posh Fish scored 100 per cent.

The mystery diner’s comments included 'the chips were perfect, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside as proper chips should be,' as well as 'the staff were friendly and efficient in their service.'

He also said that the cod was cooked to perfection and that he 'could not fault it'.

Marta D, the manager of Posh Fish said: “What an honour it is to make the list, we work hard to be the best and really appreciate our customers feedback.”

Reece Head, the competition organiser, said: “With margins getting tighter for fish and chip shop owners and more competition than ever before, it’s a tough business to be in these days.

"But these shops are going out there, investing in their business, motivating their staff, staying up-to-date with the latest food trends and embracing technology.

"But more importantly, they are giving their customers what they want – top quality food and great customer service in attractive, inviting surroundings.”

Fry Magazine’s 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways is in its sixth year and sponsors include Goldensheaf, Frymax and Friars Pride.
