TOO often youngster are condemned for their graffiti skills but this group of schoolchildren have learned more about the art and shown off their creativity.

Pupils at Windmill Primary School in Headington have shown how graffiti can be used both educationally and also as a way to create impressive art installations.

As part of a project learning about the Berlin Wall, the children rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in.

The school created a large, colourful bird to decorate one of its walls.

Headteacher Lynn Knapp said: “Year 6 children have been learning about Germany and the Berlin Wall, and how one side was graffitied.

“They investigated and an artist came in to talk about the history of graffiti art.”

The children unveiled the vibrant bird to parents on Friday.

Their creation represents freedom, which is one of the school’s 22 core values.

Mrs Knapp said the school was keen on creativity, adding: “We don’t just focus on English and maths. The arts are so important.
