A BREWER which runs an Oxford bar will celebrate a legal victory by giving a free drink to visitors this weekend.

BrewDog, which runs a bar in Cowley Road, will give out its Elvis Juice to anyone dressed as Elvis Presley after winning a lawsuit from his estate alleging it infringed on its trademark and requesting the company changed the name.

As part of its fight against the legal case, BrewDog’s founders James Watt and Martin Dickie changed their first names to Elvis by deed poll in 2016 to demonstrate the lack of exclusivity over the name.

It had initially lost the trademark battle in 2017, but appealed and the UKIPO ruled in its favour last week.

Elvis Juice is currently the third biggest-selling craft beer in the UK, after its Punk IPA and Dead Pony Club.

Mr Watt said: “This is a victory for common sense. It’s a triumph for all underdogs battling against corporate inflexibility and entrenched hubris.

“It’s a win for the thousands of beer drinkers across the world that have been refreshed by amazing craft beer, and have so passionately supported us over the last three years.

“This is a vindication of our belief in freedom and our dogged decision to appeal the initial ruling.”
