A GALLERY owner is using a new exhibition to raise money for charity after his partner was diagnosed with cancer.

Dave Davies, co-owner of Woodstock's Dantzig Gallery, has exhibited work by some of the major figures in 20th century and contemporary art - but his latest display is for a cause close to his heart.

A percentage of the money raised through Winter Blue Landscapes, by artist Rod Craig, will go to the Maggie's Centre at Oxford's Churchill Hospital, which offers practical and emotional support to thousands of people with cancer each year.

Mr Davies's partner, Beth Lumb, was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.

The news prompted a series of fundraising initiatives by the couple which have seem them raise £15,000 so far.

Ms Lumb explained why supporting Maggie's is so important to herself and Mr Davies.

The 43-year-old said: "After having the devastating diagnosis, Maggie’s was one of the first places I went to. The centre is open to anyone who is affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly and offers so many invaluable services, such as financial guidance, counselling, nutrition and yoga courses.

“Dave and I felt very strongly that we wanted to raise awareness of breast cancer and help keep Maggie’s going by fundraising for them.

“Our local community in Woodstock have been absolutely incredible in their support for us. So far, we have raised funds with a sponsored head shave, a Blenheim Ball and coffee morning, but we are keen to do more."

The fundraising element of the exhibition by Woodstock-based watercolourist Mr Craig arose from a discussion between the artist and the couple - with Mr Craig more than keen to donate a percentage from sales of the work.

Mr Craig, who has worked as a full-time artist since 2010, draws inspiration from music and his memories of life in the Oxfordshire countryside. His work is included in collections in the UK, Germany and the US and frequently features impressions of the grounds of Blenheim Palace.

Ms Lumb continued: “It is so great that we are able to use the gallery to combine our passion for art and to raise much essential funds for Maggie’s Centre.”
