A MAN has been jailed for a string of historic child sex abuse carried out on a girl in Oxford.

Andrew Jackson, of Daisy Bank, Abingdon, had denied the charges before facing a trial at Oxford Crown Court last month.

A jury convicted him of two charges of indecent assault against one victim.

At his sentencing at Oxford Crown Court yesterday the court heard how the 63-year old had carried out the assaults on at least six occasions at an address in Oxford.

The abuse was carried out on a girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, at various dates during the 1970s.

The court heard how the victim had only come forward decades later after hearing of other high profile historic sex allegations in the media.

Sentencing, Judge Maria Lamb said that not owing up to the indecent assaults and forcing a trial had gone against him in not admitting the charges at an earlier stage.

She said that had he spared his victim the ordeal of a trial it would have been a 'powerful factor' in mitigation.

In mitigation, Peter De Feu said that his client had otherwise been of 'exemplary' character in the years following the assaults and had used his time in custody helping vulnerable prisoners.

Ultimately he was jailed for 21 months for each of the two counts, to run consecutively, and totalling 42 months.

He will also remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.
