OXFORD University is 'concerned' about the ongoing situation in Myanmar - but it has no plans to strip Aung Sang Suu Kyi of her honorary degree.

She was awarded the degree from the university in 1993 but because she was under house arrest was unable to formally accept it until 2012.

Oxford City Council has said it could withdraw the Freedom of the City from her next month as a result of perceived inaction over the displacement of about 400,000 members of the Rohingya minority in Myanmar.

An Oxford University spokeswoman said: ‘‘The university shares the profound concern of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

‘Since the country established its first democratically elected government for more than 50 years, in 2015, Oxford has expanded assistance to universities in Myanmar, in particular the University of Yangon.

"The institution’s goal is to support peaceful and inclusive democracy, strengthened rule of law, and the provision of greater economic opportunities through higher education.

"The University remains committed to these ideals, and hopes the Myanmar administration, led by Oxford alumna Aung San Suu Kyi, can eliminate discrimination and oppression.

"The subject of the honorary degree is not currently under discussion."
