A DRAGON boat race on the River Thames ended with a photo finish.

The Wittenham Wannabes paddled their way to victory in the final race at the Abingdon Dragon Boat Festival yesterday - finishing just 0.35 seconds in front.

A day of drizzle did not dampen the spirits of competitors, who marked 20 years since the race was brought to Abingdon.

Twelve teams went head to head at the races, organised by the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper, which took place over a 250m course on the River Thames at Rye Farm Meadow.

David Barnett, president of the club, said: "It rained throughout the day but all the teams taking part had a great time and said they were looking forward to coming back next year.

"It was a really exciting end to the day with the close final race. It was a lot closer than the T20."

Hundreds of people from the town attended the event to watch the races, as well as enjoying a wide range of stalls and other entertainment on offer.

Funds are raised on the day which will be donated to charities supported by the rotary club.

The event has raised more than £430,000 for charity since it began.

A dragon boat is 40ft long and similar to a long canoe, decorated with a Chinese dragon head and tail.
