LESS THAN a quarter of adults in Oxfordshire do 30 minutes of physical activity a week.

Just 23.4 per cent of over-18s in the county manage to clock up half an hour of heartbeat-raising exercise every seven days, new figures from Public Health England have revealed.

The organisation has warned adults in Oxfordshire at at unnecessary risk of cancer, heart disease and poor mental health.

Evidence has shown ten minutes of walking at a 'brisk' pace each day can pevent all those illnesses and more, and physical inactivity in adults contributes to one in six deaths in the UK.

Public Health England revealed figures for Oxfordshire and the rest of the UK as it launches a new campaign encouraging people to take 10 minutes of brisk walking every day.

The organisation has produced a new mobile phone app called Active 10 to help remind people to get their exercise in.

Public Health England said: "A ten-minute walk can contribute to meeting the physical activity guidance of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each week. This can lead to health benefits including a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes by 40 per cent."
