A teenager was racially abused by a fellow passenger as she travelled to Blackbird Leys on the bus.
The 19-year-old victim was on the number five bus between Oxford city centre and the estate at about 3.45pm on Friday when another woman started racially abusing her.
The offender then threatened to hit the victim.
When the victim got off the bus at the junction of Balfour Road and Longlands Road the other woman continued to shout racist abuse at her.
She is described as white, about 40 years old and about 5ft 4ins tall.
She was of a large build and was wearing a khaki-coloured jacket and a red top.
PC Ben Branch said: "This was an unacceptable incident and we are determined to identify the offender.
"We do not tolerate hate crime within our communities and would urge anyone who witnessed the offence to please come forward.
"If you have any information, please call our 24-hour Enquiry Centre on 101."
