SOME people call it 'wiff waff', others call it 'ping pong'.

But all that matters is that residents in Risinghurst can play the sport all year round thanks to a new table tennis table being installed by the pavilion in the estate's playing field at the bottom Ringwood and Grovelands Roads.

Costing almost £2,000, Risinghurst and Sandhills Parish Council said the thinking behind installing the table was to benefit young people in the community.

Parish council chairwoman Barbara Naylor said the table was open for all, and that bats and balls could be obtained from the site's groundsman.

She added: "It's something for everyone to use.

"It's been well used so far. I have seen people up there. There are bats and balls, but people can bring their own."

Mrs Naylor said the parish council installed the table as part of a project to get more play equipment for the field.

She added: "The goalposts we built have been used everyday all day. Whatever the weather the kid are up there playing in the football goals, that's been really good."

As well as the parish council funded the project, Oxford City Councillors for Risinghurst and Quarry Dee Sinclair and Chewe Munkonge both paid £250 of out of their ward budgets towards the youth provision project, which Mrs Naylor said she was grateful for.
