AN OXFORD magazine which launched a £600,000 fundraising bid to become community-owned has smashed its target.

Now there just hours left to bag a piece of the company.

New Internationalist magazine, based on Cowley Road, launched the community share off on March 1.

The company said it was the biggest such offer ever launched in a media business.

The left-leaning magazine, which aims to highlight political and social injustice around the globe, invited readers to 'buy into a better story' by purchasing community shares during a 35-day crowdfunding campaign.

On Monday, April 3, the company hit its original £500,000 target and offered another £100,000 worth of shares.

By Wednesday it had reached that target too and offered another £50,000 worth of shares.

Shares have been bought up by 2,700 investors and the offer will close at 6pm today.
