AN OXFORD contestant on ITV’s The Chase game show has become a viral sensation.

Darragh Ennis, a lab manager in the Biochemistry Department at Oxford University, was branded a victim of ‘theft’ online after his fellow contestants accepted low or minus offers to bag a slice of his £9,000 kitty.

The contestant bagged the winnings for the team on the show on Monday, March 20, answering most of the questions correct.

But his fellow contestants opted for the easy way out and Mr Ennis was forced to share the pot between all four - giving them £1,575 each - after deductions.

Twitter went into overdrive with angry viewers posting about #JusticeforDarragh and a fundraising page was set up to replace his lost winnings.

The page states: "We need to get Darragh his £9,000 which was lost on The Chase."

It has since raised more than £100 and Mr Ennis has asked for donations to go to Helen and Douglas House Hospice.

Miriam Maslin from Abingdon set up the fundraising page after watching the show.

She said: “ I could see that Darragh looked like an extremely genuine and lovely guy even though he lost a large sum of money due to the actions of his teammates.

I first set up the account to raise money for Darragh but he requested that the money should go to the charity which I thought was a brilliant idea.”

Mr Ennis replied to the the hype, posting on LadBible: "Can people ease off my teammates.

It’s a lot harder on camera than sitting on the couch at home. They’re good people who crumbled under a lot of pressure."

Helen and Douglas House thanked Mr Ennis for donating the funds. See http://bit.ly/2nwnorS
